Network Ten is considering a Bachelor TV spinoff called The Budgielor in 2017, featuring the so-called “Budgie Nine”, a group of young men arrested in Malaysia for parading themselves in speedo-style swimwear at the F1 Grand Prix.

Ten is understood to be keen to sign the entire Budgie Nine to the dating reality franchise that has proven popular for several years, but which needs refreshing in 2017.

“When they got their kit off, some of them actually had great rigs,” a Ten producer speaking on condition of anonymity told Broken News.  “But it’s not just their good looks.  By being arrested in a foreign country, they also bring that naughty-boy flavour that the series desperately needs.

Will you accept this budgy smuggler?

Broken News understands that instead of the rose ceremonies that have proven popular on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette series, the would-be suitors would be offered pairs of the briefer-than-brief swimwear in dramatic budgy-smuggling ceremonies.

It’s understood that although none of the members of the Budgie Nine have yet signed on for the series, they are understood to be seriously considering the offer to help pay their legal bills.

The full package

Many of the Budgie Nine are well employed, hold political influence and are from wealthy families, all characteristics that are particularly appealing to The Budgielor producers.  “These guys are straight out of central casting,” one TV expert told Broken News.  “They are cashed up, influential, and have powerful jobs.  They’re the triple threat that this show needs.

Would-be suitors for the Budgie Nine would be put through a series of challenges, in similar circumstances to those seen on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.  But the new series will bring its own spin to the challenges.  Producers are currently investigating the legality of whether the suitors could participate in a “Shoey Drink Off” challenge, where they are required to drink large quantities of alcohol directly from pairs of boat shoes.

This is a developing story.  Broken News will have more on this story as it breaks.
